One Shot provided a whole new set of challenges that defy the usual skills of an editor’s bag. Rather than a conventional action romp, One Shot strives ambitiously to tell its story through the illusion of one continuous shot. Drawing inspiration from movies such as Birdman and 1917, I spent 2 weeks in pre-production experimenting with different ways to hide edits in plain sight and recce-ing the filming location, creating a visual map and designing where potential stitches will be. Once I ventured onto set, it became a very collaborative effort between myself and the camera department to create seamless transitions with pressure falling onto how a take starts and ends in order to match its corresponding shot. Most edits were created on set, on the day, with post-production then consisting of refining the transitions and applying some VFX editing knowledge. One Shot’s invisible editing received international recognition with acknowledgements such as:
…the “real time” is an illusion created by hard-to-detect editing together of several long, elaborately blocked individual shots and does effectively use that device to heighten immediacy - VARIETY
…it appears to be shot in one continuous take and strictly as an example of choreography and technical skill it’s pretty nifty. I would bet a box of popcorn there are a few sneaky invisible edits in there - THE GUARDIAN
I will admit that I found myself paying steady attention to the editing and there were maybe maybe two scenes in which I saw what could be an edit bridging one scene or take to another; otherwise, believe the title. - ELEMENTS OF MADNESS
